Dear West Star Supporters:  Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy New Year!  We’d like to thank Dawn Brown, the Plavics family, Edzos, Don Simons, Arianna and Alanna and friends, Brian Lizotte, Ketch Mills, Bill Stanley, Renee Carleton and The Pet Food Bank, Peaceful Paws, Jane & Bill Hoth, Paula Gifford, Jannifer Jones, Cathy Edmonson, Armando Pizzi, and John Shea of Pahrump Valley Disposal for their generosity.  A big thank you to all of our volunteers – the largest and most enthusiastic group in West Star’s history!!

HERE ARE A FEW OF WEST STAR’S WONDERFUL ANIMALS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION:

Saffron, female chow mix, 3 years old, spade and shots.  Loving, gentle and easy going! She would make a wonderful addition to any dog-loving home.

Pizza, a friendly 4-5 year old male orange tabby, neutered, OK with dogs and peacocks.  Named for his affinity for pizza!

Daisy, 3 year old female rottie, spayed, shots, she needs to be an “only female dog,” loving and playful.

WE ARE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS~ Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the Ranch.  There are dogs and cats to brush, walk, or play with.  If you can help with the many repairs that crop up, great!   The thrift store needs donation sorters and folks to assist customers and arrange displays.  We have a job for everyone!  Volunteering is good for what ails you!  Please stop in, contact us at weststarfundraising@yahoo.com  or call (775) 727-6505 and talk to Heidi to schedule a day and time that’s convenient for you.

West Star’s “Wish List”:

+        A kind and loving home for all of our animals

+        A double-wide trailer (or small building) to replace the Thrift Store (we can dream, right?)

+        Canned cat food for our senior felines

Spring, 2016 Newsletter

We want to do a shout-out to our supporters and volunteers — without them, we couldn’t be here —  so let’s start with:

VOLUNTEER NEWS:

The Ranch has been blessed with an influx of wonderful folks who have donated their time and energy to working in the store, caring for our animals and help with Ranch chores.  Our sincere thanks to the amazing Jonah Ansel, who has helped with everything from cleanup to repairs to tree trimming.   We’re happy to welcome Mary Massey and Heidi, who love working in the store and organizing our displays, and Erin, who loves working with the animals.

DONATIONS:

  • The Ranch received a very generous $500 donation from Peaceful Paws Charitable Fund, which was used to help care for the little family of a mama and her kittens who were left during the night outside the Ranch gates, starving and suffering from ringworm and mites.  A vet visit and multiple medications were required to bring the poor little guys back to health, but a few good looking males are now available for adoption, thanks to Peaceful Paws’ generosity.
  • Big hugs to Ranch friends Anita Kase, Paula Gifford, Michelle Skorzanka, Dan Whitcomb, and Melinda Gore who also contributed through West Star’s “gofundme” page to help with the kittens’ care.  A heartfelt thanks to Ed and Judy Plavac, who make a monthly donation to the Ranch.  These donations enable us to care for the special needs of our critters and are so appreciated!
  • Our love and thanks to Emily Skorzanka and Mark Taylor, who have given their family and friends  the option to donate to West Star in lieu of wedding and shower gifts.   We wish them a long and loving marriage.
  • More Thanks!  Another round of thanks to SHAWN RYAN, who continues donate his time and donations to repair and replace our camera system. His willingness to travel from Las Vegas whenever the Ranch has problems is so appreciated!  Also, to RANDY PHILLIPS AND COLOR REFLECTIONS DYNAMIC DIGITAL IMAGING of Las Vegas for another wonderful donation of two new large banners for the Ranch to use on our front gate and for our “road shows.”  They do wonderful work and we’re very proud to display our new signage.  We appreciate you so much!

If you’ve adopted a pet from West Star, and would like to support the Ranch’s efforts continue to provide care for abandoned and abused animals, please consider making a donation to WEST STAR RANCH. The cost of caring for our animals, and maintaining and improving the Ranch to accommodate our critters continues to rise.  As a 501(c)3, your donation to West Star Ranch is completely tax deductible.

IMPROVEMENTS AT THE RANCH:

Scott Brooks and his crew have built a much needed cover over our donation area.  We’re grateful and excited to have this donation of materials, time and expertise to improve conditions for storage and sorting of our donations. Big thanks to Scott!

HELP US FIND A SOLUTION:

THRIFT STORE BUILDING ~~~  We are still searching for a double wide trailer  or other building to replace our aging thrift store.  We’re open to suggestions, so if you have an idea, or know of something that might fit the bill, please call the Ranch and talk to Terry(775) 727-6505.

PROVIDING FOR YOUR PETS AFTER DEATH:

Terry can attest that many times the care of beloved pets is not provided for after an owner’s demise, with tragic consequences.  Often these pets are abandoned, picked up by Animal Control or otherwise forgotten.  You can provide for your pets after death by leaving instructions, either as a codicil to your will or an amendment to your Trust.  West Star would be happy to assist you in making arrangements for your pets to be cared for by the Ranch.  Please call our Ranch in-house paralegal, Kim Simon, at (702) 445-7000, for help in making sure your four-legged family members are taken care of when you are no longer able to.  Bequests to the Ranch are also welcome and our legal staff can provide you with the appropriate instructions for a gift to West Star.

MEET TANGO AND ROCKY

Ready and waiting to go home to a loving family, these two young and lovable bull mastiffs are neutered and ready to go!  While they look ferocious, they are very friendly and affectionate, once they get to know you.

Tango and James

They’re around two-years old and good with adults and children.  No guarantees as to cats!  Please consider adopting one of these wonderful dogs.  Our adoption fee is just $100 per animal.

Dear West Star Supporters:  Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year!  We’d like to thank you for the tremendous outpouring of generosity in response to our fall newsletter!  Much needed donations were received from Phyllis and Bob Reaney (owners of Charlie, the Shih-Tzu), Dawn Brown and Clarice Stuhr, of Pahrump.  Joyce and Ron Piotter made a donation of a new American Flag for the Ranch in honor of West Star’s founder, Elsie Dougherty.

Terry-front-gateWe have beautiful new signage, donated by and thanks to Randy Phillips of Color Reflections Dynamic Digital Imaging, located in Las Vegas.  Randy took time out from his extremely busy schedule to produce two eye-catching banners for the Ranch and additional signage we will use to make it easier for customers to locate the Ranch.  Come visit and check out the new look!  Thanks very much, Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our new volunteer, Linda Geenen (adopter of Chevy, with her son, Dan Nelson), has contributed many hours updating our weststarranch.org website.  Because of budget restraints the website had not been serviced or augmented for many moons.  Linda has changed the Ranch contact information, added donation options, so we can take donations via Paypal or the West Star Gofundme page, and you will be seeing new pictures, links and news as the page evolves under Linda’s care.  Check out the page when you have a moment!  Thanks so much, Linda!

Dave Champion often mentions West Star Ranch during his program, The Dave Champion Show, on Thursday nights.  We’d like to thank Dave for his long time support of the Ranch and wish him well.

RANCH NEWSTerry, James and the crew are working hard to winterize the Ranch and prepare for the cold weather ahead.  Dog houses are being insulated, the cattery is full of warm beds, and the thrift store is stocked with cold weather gear including coats, sweatshirts, gloves, hats and the like.  A couple of big trees came down and must be cleared away, which will necessitate renting a large dumpster to handle the debris.  We’re also actively seeking a new building to replace the doublewide that houses the Thrift Store.  Anyone with ideas, donations and/or skills that would help with this project is welcome!

WE ARE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS~~~ Our volunteers are the life blood of the Ranch.  Even if you only have an hour or two to contribute, we need you!  There are always dogs and cats to feed, brush, walk, or pet.  If you have a special skill that would help with the repairs that always need to be done, great!   The store requires donation sorters/labelers, folks to run the register and assist customers.  If you have a flair for design, come in and create a display or if you prefer, general cleaning and dusting is always needed.  We have a job for everyone!  Volunteering is good for what ails you!  Please stop in, call (775) 727-6505 or contact us at weststarfundraising@yahoo.com to schedule a day and time that’s convenient for you.

dog-of-the-monthRoxy cropped (2)

This month we are featuring Roxy, an 8 year old female pit bull, sweet as can be, good with dogs and children.  Roxy can be adopted for a fee of $100, which includes a “complementary bag of dog food.”  Giving a dog a “forever home” is a perfect way to make the holidays meaningful.

Did you know that Car Studio, the full-service car wash/detailer located on Rt. 160 in the Terrible’s Casino parking lot, contributes 25% of its profits to West Star Ranch?  Car Studio and its manager, Shamus McCord, have also been recognized for their participation and support of the Special Olympics!

Fall, 2015 Newsletter

Many thanks to our “Thursday Family,” Debbie, Betsy, Crystal and Jesse, who spend their day off together helping Terry and James at the Ranch.  Their commitment, caring and support is incredibly important to West Star, which is the only remaining no kill facility for abandoned and abused animals in Pahrump and Nye County!

Another welcome donation to West Star is a  camera  security system, donated by Shawn Ryan of Las Vegas.  Shawn works at the South Point Hotel, and is an expert in the installation of the technology.  We’ve needed an update to our old camera system for years – Thank you, Shawn!

Thanks to Ron Gray and family, for paying for many of our dogs to receive their first grooming.  It was a joy to see the dogs clean and comfortable – We appreciate you, Ron!

Staff news:  Terry Dougherty, president of West Star, was sidelined last year by serious injuries he sustained in an attempted rescue of six abandoned pit bulls.  We’re all very proud of his recovery and determination as he continues to give his all to West Star and the animals that rely on the Ranch for food, shelter and love.  We would also like to welcome James Landram to the Ranch, who came all the way from Kentucky to join us – he’s a true animal lover and a valued addition to our core volunteers.  Finally, a warm hug to Carolyn Lind, who has been volunteering for the Ranch since Elsie’s days.  We love you, Carolyn!  ♥
